Just be aware how things are categorized, and how the combination of magic effects might turn out. At the very least, I would recommend tracking down existing spell that already function similar to what you want, and examine how they accomplish it. Actually, I believe modifying an existing spell would be the best approach, especially for somebody just starting into modding.
